Juror Scam Information

JUROR SCAM ALERT: People are impersonating the U.S. Marshal Service and other law enforcement agencies telling individuals that they must pay money for not reporting to jury duty or they will be arrested.  THIS IS A SCAM!  The U.S. Marshals, Sheriff’s Office, or Police Department will NEVER call you regarding federal jury service nor will they ask you to pay for not attending federal jury service.

Scammers are calling people and pretending to be from Minnesota law enforcement agencies. In some cases, they “spoof” the court telephone number so it looks like you are receiving a call from the court or from a law enforcement agency.

In these calls, the scammer says you must pay a fine for missing jury service. They will try to keep you on the phone. The scammer might ask for your credit card number or suggest some other way to pay the fine (meet with cash, VENMO, Coinstar) to avoid jail time. These communications are fraudulent and are not connected with the U.S. courts.

Jury service is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens. However, it is a crime for anyone to falsely represent themselves as a federal court official. The federal judiciary takes such offenses seriously.

If you receive a call asking you to pay a fine for missing jury service:

  • Do not give out your credit card number or make any payment!
  • Do not share any personal information, such as your social security number.
  • Report the call to your local law enforcement agency.
  • Contact the Clerk of Court’s office at 612-664-5000 if you have questions.
