Magistrate Judge Steven E. Rau
Magistrate Judge Steven E. Rau was born in Massachusetts and lived there until he was 9. His father, who was a career Air Force officer, was then stationed in Washington D.C., Kabul, Afghanistan, Southern California, and Bellevue, Nebraska. Judge Rau's parents grew up in St. Paul and as a result, Judge Rau wanted to attend college in Minnesota. He attended and graduated from Carleton College. He received his law degree with honors from William Mitchell College of Law.
After graduating he served as a law clerk to Chief Justice Douglas K. Amdahl at the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1983 to 1984. He then joined the firm of Lindquist & Vennum in Minneapolis.
Judge Rau moved his practice back to St. Paul in 1987 when he joined the firm formerly known as Maun & Simon where he practiced until 1994. In 1994 Judge Rau started his own practice and in 1996 his former law school classmate, Paul Floyd, joined him.
Since 2000 he has practiced with the firm of Flynn, Gaskins, Bennett, where he specialized in litigation of employment, business and commercial cases.
In addition to his legal practice, he has also served as an adjunct faculty member at William Mitchell College of Law and Hamline University, where he taught courses in antitrust and commercial law. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of St. Thomas Law School.
