In Her Honor — A Celebration of Minnesota Women
in the Law

Starting in September 2014, the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota and the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association introduced the In Her Honor — A Celebration of Minnesota Women in the Law series of events. The In Her Honor programming series was made possible by the efforts of Chief Judge Michael J. Davis (co-chair), FBA Minnesota Chapter President Rachel Zimmerman (co-chair), Judge Dian Murphy (honorary chair), and Justice Lori Gildea (honorary co-chair).

On September 15, 2014, the In Her Honor series launched with a dinner honoring Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Diana E. Murphy. The event included a several prominent Minnesota jurists and culminated with a keynote address by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. At the event, Judge Murphy was recognized for her many "firsts," which include:

  • First woman to be a U.S. District Judge in Minnesota
  • First woman to be Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court, District of Minnesota
  • First woman to be Chief Judge of a district court in the Eighth Circuit
  • First woman appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit
  • First woman to chair the U.S. Sentencing Commission

In February 2015, the Court displayed a new exhibit that highlighted some of Minnesota's notable women lawyers and judges. The exhibit honored over 30 Minnesota women who have served in distinguished legal roles throughout the state. The Court, in conjunction with the Minnesota Chapter of the FBA, launched the new exhibit with a reception and opening ceremony on February 23, 2015 at the Minneapolis Courthouse. Chief Judge Michael J. Davis presided over the opening ceremony, which included speeches from Judge Diana E. Murphy, Judge Ann D. Montgomery, Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Skjerven Gildea, Rachel K. Zimmerman, and Rachna B. Sullivan.
